Adopt a Valentine
February 10, 11, 12, 2006

This past Valentine's Day weekend, love was in the air at Northbrook Court. Puppy love to be exact. And a lot of cat love too. Northbrook Court shopping center invited adoptable dogs and cats from our shelter into the mall. Our volunteers heard the call and a very successful Adopt a Valentine event happened.

Shoppers were drawn into the space by the sight of loveable kittens, playful puppies, irresistable seniors and a variety of great pets. Shoppers dropped all packages to hold a purring cat or hug a mutt.

The time and dedication of our generous volunteers made the event work. They picked up and delivered the animls to and from NBC. They introduced them to prospective adopters, explained the adoption process and that adopting a deserving orphan is a smart choice and one way to get a great pet.

The total number of adoptions for that weekend at the shelter were in the "most excellent" range. With 22 on saturday and 18 on sunday. An average weekend is half of that quantity. We attribute the high number of adoptions to the exposure at NBC. Over the weekend, the shelter received numerous calls for directions from NBC and numerous comments about the animals being shown at NBC.

Some of the orphans who found forever homes:

  • Pappa, a 13 year-old lab mix with a completely gray muzzle. He went to live with a 10 year-old golden retriever in Lake Bluff.
  • Brown Sugar, a 9 week-old shepherd mix. He went to live with a stray brought home from a vacation in Puerto Rica.
  • Elf, a male, 8 year-old, spaniel mix who had been shown at NBC twice over the christmas gift wrapping period finally got his turn at forever happiness.
  • Sissy and My-My. Six year-old Persian sisters who had been left at the kennel gate in the early morning of January 3 witha sad letter of apology. Sissy had only three legs. They needed to be adopted together.

Although we did not do much valentine gift wrapping. Our donation jar brought in $896. One generous donor dropped in a $500 check.

Thank you to all of the wonderful volunteers who gave of their time and energy for the animals. You really did make a difference. You are the best!
