The Adoption Process

We invite you to come to the shelter and find a dog or a cat that will become your lifelong friend and companion. Before you come to visit there are a few things you should make sure to bring along.

  • Bring a current drivers license with your correct address or a state ID with a photo.
  • To cover the $90 adoption fee you may use either a credit card (Visa, MasterCard, American Express or Discover Card) or cash. We do not accept checks.
  • Bring as many members of your family as possible (including dogs) to help make sure the new member is a good fit.

Dog Adoptions

When you visit our shelter, there should be well over 100 dogs for you to choose from. Take your time and visit with any that appeal to you. Make sure to read the information on the kennel card attached to each dog's kennel gate. This card will give you basic information such as the dog's temporary name, breed, approximate age and whether it is spayed or neutered, and, of course, the kennel number. When you find a dog, or several, that you are be interested in, you may then go to the front desk with a specific kennel number and ask for further details on any dog. At the front desk you will be asked to fill out a one page adoption application and conduct a brief interview after which the adoption counselor will retrieve the dog you are interested in so that you may meet him one-on-one.

You will be directed to the east side of the shelter grounds where there is a lawn and benches, and also two family outdoor fenced areas where you may go in and spend time with the dog off leash. Take your time with the dog. He will probably be distracted by the sound of other barking dogs. Don't expect him to be your best friend immediately. Let him run off some energy. Remember, he has been living in a kennel and needs to stretch his legs and focus on you before he can settle down to get acquainted with you.

After you have spent time with one or more dogs and have made the decision to adopt one, come back to the front office to the adoption counselor. The counselor will prepare the paperwork for the adoption. The paperwork will include the adoption contract, instructions on follow-up veterinary care, and a medical information sheet, all of which will be explained to you in detail.

Our adoption fee is $90 and can be paid in the form of a credit card (Visa, MasterCard, American Express or Discover Card) or cash. We do not accept checks.

The adoption fee of $90 includes the first innoculations, a general worming, a kennel cough preventative, a flea and tick treatment, a collar, leash and a tag. The dog will be spayed/neutered (if he is not already) at no expense to you at our animal hospital before going home with you.

There will be a final series of innoculations at your expense which includes second distemper/booster shot, fecal exam, rabies vaccination and a heartworm test. These will be given at the same time as the spay/neuter and may be paid for at the animal hospital when you pick up your new dog.

Cat Adoptions

When you visit the shelter to adopt a cat we will direct you to our cat wing. There you will choose from over 300 cats in our adult cat room and in the hallway leading up to it. When you have found a cat that you like (or when a cat has found you), you may then ask one of the adoption counselors for any additional information we may have on that particular cat. When you are ready to adopt we ask you to fill out a one page adoption application form and conduct a brief interview with one of our adoption counselors. After which we will prepare the adoption paperwork. The paperwork will include the adoption contract, instructions on follow-up veterinary care, and a medical information sheet, all of which will be explained to you in detail.

Our adoption fee is $90 and can be in the form of a credit card (Visa, MasterCard, American Express or Discover Card) or cash. We do not accept checks.
